Shopping in NYC

Sunday was my last full day in NYC. Melanie and I went out for breakfast. I had a delicious cappuccino:

A shot of Times Square. We actually walked through there several times during my stay.

Melanie took me to one of her favorite places to shop for vintage clothes. We had such fun trying on outfits!

Doesn’t she look adorable? I think she looks stunning in this dress:

There was a vintage dressmakers dummy at the shop.

NYC at night

One fun thing about New York City is that there’s so much going on at night. Melanie took me to Washington Square Park.

The Washington Square Arch is quite detailed and lovely.

The fountain looked cool at night.

While walking by some scaffolding I saw this poison sign. Kinda creepy!

NYC art show

Saturday in NYC was such a wonderful day. After breakfast Melanie and I explored more. We visited Carl Schurz Park which is a lovely park. We also went to a local art show there.

NYC art fair

The mixture of nature and architecture was beautiful.

I love that there is so much nature in NYC. If only Albuquerque were more like this.

Bagels and opera

Saturday in NYC Melanie asked me what I wanted for breakfast. I said I wanted a New York bagel. She took me to H&H Midtown Bagels.

I got salmon lox on an everything bagel.

New York City trip 2010

It was delicious! I savored every bite.

After we bought our bagels we walked around a bit before settling down to eat. As we were walking we started hearing opera. At first we thought it was someone practicing in their apartment. But it turns out there were opera singers at a nearby farmers’ market.

They were part of an Opera Collective that brings opera music out to neighborhoods for free.

Melanie and I sat down and ate our bagels while listening to opera. The singers sang several solo and duet pieces while we were there. It was a magical breakfast.

I spotted some NYC wildlife while there.

New York City subway

While in New York Melanie and I rode the subway to get around. Some of the subway stations were decorated.

I’ve loved mosaics ever since taking Latin in high school.

More public transportation should be decorated. It makes normal tasks fun.

This looked like you were entering a cave.

Katz’s Deli

While in NYC I ate such amazing food. Thebes hates big cities and Grant was visiting at the time so he stayed at home. Thebes has extreme food allergies so our diet is very restricted. But since I was on vacation by myself I ate whatever I craved. My friend Melanie is a New Yorker and took me to great restaurants. Here she is on the subway:

New York City trip

She took me to Katz’s Deli. They’re very well known and even have their own Wiki page.

One of it’s claims to fame is that the famous fake orgasm scene in When Harry Met Sally was filmed here. There’s even a sign over the actual table. We took a funny pic:

The food was amazing. You order at the counter and sometimes get a sample. The guy making my pastrami sandwich handed me a slice of meat and said “this is the best pastrami in New York”. After eating it I believed him. It melted in my mouth. Here’s the sandwich:

So delicious! I also had a traditional Jewish drink but can’t remember what it’s called:

That was also delicious! So yummy. The pickles were excellent too.

We also got matzo ball soup:

I’m not crazy about matzo but it was nice to have one there.

More NYC pics to come. Melanie was an excellent host and introduced me to such yummy food!

MOMA visit

While in NYC I got to visit the MOMA, The Museum of Modern Art. I love the MOMA so much! This is the second time I’ve been; Thebes and I were there back in ’99. There was so much inspiration everywhere!

My friend Melanie works nearby and was able to get me in free! Plus my pass got me into several members preview exhibits. One was an exhibit of abstract art. In the past I was never into abstract art. But that day it really inspired me. I was in the right frame of mind to finally commune with abstract art.

MOMA visit

Melanie had to work Friday so I spent the day at the museum. There was so much beauty and creativity everywhere! I was crying I was so moved by all that art. At first I felt weird about that but then thought surely I’m not the only one who’s felt that way.

Here’s some pieces that moved me.

Adolph Gottlieb
Man Looking at Woman

Bradley Walker Tomlin
Number 9: In Praise of Gertrude Stein

David Smith

Jackson Pollock
Full Fathom Five

MOMA visit

Photographs of Pollock’s work just aren’t the same. Standing right in front of his art was incredibly moving. The piece above had such texture-there were nails, coins, paint caps and a key in the painting.

This next picture was inspired by Doug Stanhope. The painting is

Roy Lichtenstein

Rene Magritte
The False Mirror

This painting reminds me of some of my spiritual moments.

Pablo Picasso

Meret Oppenheim

Louise Nevelson

This reminded me of Abbey so much. It also reminds me of her bookcase.

Vladimir Baranoff-Rossine

Ad Reinhardt
Abstract Painting

MOMA visit

This painting blew my mind. At first it looked just like a plain black canvas. But I figured there was more to it so sat down on a bench and stared at it for several minutes. Slowly my eyes adjusted and I started seeing several different blacks, purples and reds. Freaking amazing!!! There’s a much better photo of this painting on MOMA’s site.

Vincent van Gogh
The Starry Night

Such a classic.

Edvard Munch
The Storm

This was a moody painting that I could relate to.

Claude Monet

The grand scale of Monet’s paintings is mind blowing. So beautiful.

A cyanotype! After the Green Man I have a renewed interest in them.

Oh I loved my NYC visit so much! I’m getting all excited again just blogging about it. More pics to come.
