Felt flower

I made a few felt examples for my felt class back in May. One of them was this felt flower:

Felt flower

I felted a sweater and cut it up into triangles. Originally I intended to make felt bunting but the felt wouldn’t go through my sewing machine. It kept getting sucked into the bobbin hole. So I took a handful and handsewed them into a flower shape.

For the stamens I rolled up four of the triangles and sewed them into place. I sewed a recycled button into the middle.

We let the cats outside during the day but keep them inside at night.

Poppy Purse

When I brought my Sunflower Purse into Weaving Southwest to sell they requested a poppy one. Here’s my first poppy purse:

Poppy Purse

I left the leaves the same but the petals are different. I think it turned out well.

The colorway for the green is Grassy Knoll. I love how it felts up.

And a pre-felting shot:

I’m really happy with how much it looks like a flower. Will there be more of these purses in my future? Oh definitely. For now this purse is for sale at Weaving Southwest.

Sunflower Purse

I made another tentacle purse. This time around I altered Abbey’s pattern and made a sunflower.

Sunflower purse

I love how it turned out! It’s super cute and looks like a sunflower to me.

The purse is made with Lamb’s Pride worsted wool. This yarn felts beautifully.

Weaving Southwest invited me to sell my flower purses at their store. I was delighted at the offer! This purse is for sale there now.

Lunar Life

I’m making individual posts for my art pieces so I can better catalog them.

Lunar Life

Lunar Life honors the traditional Pagan phases of a woman’s life-Maiden, Mother, Crone. It also uses the Pagan symbol of the triple moon which represents the Goddess.

Lunar Life

The Maiden is the top triple moon. She is a young girl dancing through spring. The trees and flowers are just beginning to bloom as is she. The spiral of life is in her chest since childhood is so full of emotional experiences.

Lunar Life

The Mother is the middle triple moon. The woman is in the midst of her garden. Trees and flowers are in full bloom. The spiral is in her womb because she is creating.

Lunar Life

The Crone is the last triple moon. The woman is floating upwards. The trees’ leaves have fallen and the flowers have died. The spiral is in her head because she is in the spiritual time of her life.

Lunar Life

The branch atop echoes the trees in the moons. The ribbons tie the moons together as the phases of life are tied together.

For this piece I spun several of the yarns. Techniques used were needle felting, embroidery and hand sewing.

Lunar Life was featured in the 2009 Beyond The Fringe art show. It also won second place in the Embroidery Division at the 2011 Albuquerque Fiber Arts Fiesta. It is currently on display at Lori’s Yarn & Fibers in Taos.

The dimensions are 32″H x 18″W x 2″ D.

Felt flowers

Remember my hat project? I’ve been wearing it for months and finally got around to taking pictures.

Flower hat

This was a wonderful and relaxing project. I knit I-cord for the vines and hand felted them in a Ziplock bag in the sink. Then I crocheted little circles and needle felted them.

Flower hat

After sewing the flowers onto the vine I sewed the vine onto the hat.

Flower hat

Both vine and flower yarns came from my stash. I love how it turned out!

My first felt class

Last month I taught my first felting class. The class was Introduction To Felting and was held at Creative Pieces (FB link). I talked about wet felting, needle felting, nuno felting, knitting to felt and felting sweaters for fabric.

Felt Class

Above is my table of felting samples. My class was small but I think it was a promising beginning.

Felting demonstration

I’ll be teaching a felting demonstration this Saturday at Creative Pieces (FB link) in Taos. The class is free and will start at 1pm, running for an hour.

“Come learn about felting techniques to use in your crafts. Fiber artist Twilight Kallisti will be showing examples of different types of felt. Learn about wet felting, needle felting, nuno felting, knitting to felt and felting sweaters for fabric. This is an introdution demonstration and no prior knowledge of felting is needed.”

Bingo purse

The tentacle purse turned out great!

Bingo purse

It’s a little smaller than my purse but I think that’s ok.

The bottom of the purse:

The mohair in Lamb’s Pride gives it a lovely halo.

I’m happy with my color blending on the petals.

I altered Abbey’s pattern and sewed on snaps for the closure. I liked the snaps so much I put one on my tentacle purse.

I sent it off to Bingo and Doug Stanhope emailed me back sending her thanks and said she loved it.

And here’s Doug posing with me after his show in Arizona last December.

Doug Stanhope

I asked him if he’d bite my tentacle (Ooh that sounds so pervy!) for the photo. He’s such a good sport for his fans.

Tentacle purse prefelting

In December Thebes and I drove to Arizona to see comedian Doug Stanhope. He’s one of my favorite comedians. I’ve linked to his YouTube videos if you want to check him out. I’ll warn you though he’s not for everyone-lots of cursing, sexual topics and raw politics. It’s all stuff I love of course.

Anyway, after the show I bought two of his CD’s from his girlfriend Bingo. I put my tentacle purse on the table to pull out my wallet. She loved my purse and wanted to buy it. But Abbey made it for me so I couldn’t. Instead I offered to make her one in her favorite colors. She wanted orange and pink.

Abbey gave me her instructions and I set off to make it.

Bingo tentacle purse

These are not normally my colors but I liked playing with them. There’s a lot of randomness and chaos in this pattern which was good for me.

Bingo tentacle purse

This is prefelted. It’s felted now and I’ll post pics of it soon.

Wild Orchid Purse

When Abbey showed me her new purse I fell in love with it. I asked her to make me one. Check it out!

Wild Orchid Purse

She calls it the Wild Orchid. She made her own blog post about making it.

Wild Orchid Purse

I think it looks like a cross between a flower and a Muppet.

Wild Orchid Purse

I did make one alteration. The opening was too big for my tastes. So I sewed up little “pinches” around the opening to tighten it.

Wild Orchid Purse

The petals are pockets which means the purse is bigger than it looks. When looking for something I just feel the petals until I find what I’m looking for.

Wild Orchid Purse

The handle is just a tied knot.

Wild Orchid Purse

She did a great job on blending colors!

Wild Orchid Purse

A close up of a petal:

The closure is an easy to work latch.

Wild Orchid Purse

I think the purse looks most like a flower when turned upside down.

Thank you SO much Abbey! I love it so much!
