I was honored when I was asked to participate in the Beyond The Fringe show. I created two original pieces for the event.
Lunar Life
32″ X 18″

Maiden

Mother

Crone

An Arrangement Of Elements
58″ X 58″

Earth

Air

Fire

Water

Spirit

A bit from my artist statement:
“Creating her art involves elements of spinning, knitting and needle felting. Twilight is particularly interested in working with colors and fibers to create evocative images. Nature is an endless source of inspiration for her. She identifies with pre-Judeo-Christian religions and expresses this spirituality in Goddess, Pagan and nature imagery throughout her “woolen paintings”.
Her piece An Arrangement of Elements explores the five elements and the connection to Source each one represents. The tryptic Lunar Life represents the Pagan concept of the Goddess’ three phases-Maiden, Mother, Crone. Twilight takes this concept and shows how a woman’s life is spiritual in all these stages.”

I figured out how to sign my art.

These “signature patches” are going on the back of my pieces. While “Twilight ‘09″ seems like the obvious choice I couldn’t resist going with my nickname. Seems more hip.
Thursday night we got an intense spring storm. Friday morning we woke up to this:

Sieben naturally was in doggie heaven. He loves the snow.
Check out this huge icicle:

As I’m typing this blog post it sounds like we’re about to get more snow.

Prana didn’t stay outside for long.

Guess who forgot to turn the wheelbarrow over after using it last time? Oops!

I had grand jury duty again this month. One part that sucks is I have to be there at 9am. Ugh. One part that’s nice is the bailiff said it was ok to have my knitting needles as long as they weren’t metal. Knitting during breaks helps the time pass so much. I’ve made some progress on the second kilt hose.

Brook’s Farm yarn is a delight to work with. I’m glad I bought more of it at the Wool Fest.
I’ve also made some progress on the Fisherman’s shrug. The back is completed but the picture turned out blurry. Here’s one of the sleeves with a blurry tail:

Though I’m not using the right needles, not getting gauge and not using the recommended yarn I’m still getting the end dimensions. Rock on!
Prana inspected my work and approves.

Abigail Z is another artist who will be in the Beyond The Fringe show. Her works combine knitting, needle felting and embroidery.
A neat thing about her Prayer series is the work is based on women and men she knows. The two following pieces, Helen and Whitney, are based on two women I know. She’s planning on making a piece based on me which I find quite humbling.
Helen

Whitney

Abigail says “Current pieces are an exercise in creative visualization for healing. They are from a larger body of work- “Prayer: Hallucinations, Meditations, and Dreams”. It’s an inner expression of joy; familiar and comforting. An interpretation of the Goddess energy in my life and blessings in the Universe.

I’m getting really close to being finished with my Elements piece. The reception for Beyond The Fringe is less than two weeks away!
Here’s a close up of the Air Moon:

A close up of the Water Moon is below. I had a lot of fun making the seaweed.

The Air and Water Goddesses are moving in opposite directions which makes a nice effect when all the Elements are put together.
Sieben was recently given a deer leg. It had some meat and hair but he stripped it bare the first night he had it. He’s a happy doggie.

For my Earth Moon I’m making a willow tree which is one of my favorite trees.

The trunk and roots is made from my handspun.

At first I didn’t think I needed a head and arms since the branches would cover them.

But after putting on some branches I realized I needed them to make the branches level throughout.
That’s a fun part about needlefelting. All I needed to do was rip up some yarn, put some other yarn down and then use my felt needles to tap everything down.

Artist Carolyn Irving Hinske will also be in the Beyond The Fringe. These two pieces will be in the show.
Patta
discharged rayon on handmade paper, each are 11″ x 17″

Number 2
47″ x 33″
shiboried silk and knitted swatches with handmade polymer, glass and bone beads

More of her work:
Memphis Remembered
silk on bamboo, approximately 16″ x 37″

Carolyn says “Two of my most popular designs are the simple and classic silk scarf and the versatile ruana wrap. For the past several years I’ve been working in the ancient Oriental techniques of shibori, which involves wrapping, stitching and pleating fabric in certain and specific ways before hand dyeing it. I also use block printing and discharge methods with my fiber pieces. Most recently I have added knitted works to my wearable art line.”

In Hawaii Thebes and I went on a lava tour. We went to the Volcano museum, saw the plume of the current eruption and then watched lava hit the ocean as the sun set.
As I watched the lava I saw Goddess Pele dancing. In college Pele influenced me a lot. I was 23 when I had visions of her. Somehow it was fitting that on the last day I was 32 I saw her again. It was one of the most spiritual experiences of my life.

When we got back I felt re-energized with my artwork. My Fire Moon is inspired by Pele. Here’s my version of her:

I wanted her to exhale fireballs because that’s what happened in my Pele visions. First I created some mini fire batts.

Then I spun it up Navajo style and created lava yarn.

After getting a camera case at the Ala Moana Center, Thebes and I strolled around. We found this lovely pathway by the Ala Wai Canal.

It was such a gorgeous spot, one of my favorites of the trip.

Thebes took this picture. I love Hawaii-gorgeous flowers were just everywhere.

This is what it looked like walking under the trees.

There was a convention center by the path.
