Beyond The Fringe artist: Mary Lyon
February 3rd, 2009
Mary Lyon is one of the artists in Beyond The Fringe. Her work combines piecing, quilting and hand-dyed fabric. Here’s some samples of her work.
Order & Chaos
hand-dyed fabric, 15″ x 15″

Mystery
fabric and beads, 22″ x 15″

Two
hand-dyed and painted fabric with embossing material, 14″ x 16″

Mary says:
“I have always been interested in both art and science, but spent most of my career as a research scientist. After retiring from science, I began experimenting with fabric, teaching myself methods from books. Most recently, I have been doing a good deal of dyeing and painting of fabrics in an effort to combine a more painterly approach with traditional quilting techniques. The piecing and quilting are quite precise, while the dyeing and painting are much freer. I find both types of work very satisfying and I am still working to blend the two approaches. I like working with the fabrics because of the textural feel and the slight bas-relief effect after quilting. I have been incorporating the use of beads, stones and small carvings. With fabric, almost anything is possible!”
