Crafting Along

My stash skirt is coming along slowly because I had to frog several inches. I had a plan to increase the top portion and it just wasn’t working out. So I frogged out that section with the added stitches and started again. Since this is my own pattern I didn’t mind having to rip out stitches. Progress is slow but steady.

I’ve started a new project. It’s going to be a needle case. Sticking with the Knit From Your Stash theme I’m using the leftover yarn from my No Pattern Purse. I’m weaving it into plastic fabric.

Needle case

This project is based on a needle case my mother had when I was a child. She disowned me when I was 18 so unfortunately I can’t ask her for help. Somehow working on this project is making me feel closer to my mom which is unexpectedly nice.

Plans for the needle case are as follows. I’m going to weave the yarn into the plastic fabric pieces and then sew them together. If I were to do it over again I’d leave one row on the side of each piece empty to weave them together. Then I’ll sew in fabric and add ties to hold it closed.

A Completed Purse

My no pattern purse is done. Some finished purse pics:

There’s lots of room inside and the pockets turned out well.

A pic of the bottom where the strap wraps around:

The strap curls a bit but not too bad. I like how the pink fabric looks so bright when I zip open the purse.

I think I’ll still use my Che purse as my primary handbag. But this purse is great for a fancy evening out or for traveling on an airplane which is what I did with it over the weekend. This purse is larger then Che and I’m enjoying the extra room.

Finishing the purse

My No Pattern Purse blocked fine and was ready to be put together. The other night I did just that.

For a Solstice present two years ago Thebes got me some baticked fat quarters. One of the fabrics matched the purse wonderfully. I measured out for the rectangles and added some pockets.

Often my pen seems lost in my purse so I made a special pocket so it would always be easy to find.

Since the strap was one continous strap around the bottom and sides of the purse I had to add small rectangles for the lining. I didn’t have enough fabric to make a continous strip so I ended up sewing three pieces. You can see that in the above pictures that I hadn’t yet sewn the corners. I wanted to make sure everything was lined up correctly first.

There was only enough for the lining and pockets so I used some plain fabric for the strap lining. After ironing some interface to the strap lining I pinned it to the knit strap.

Putting my knitting under my sewing machine always makes me nervous. But it turned out fine.

My machine has a zipper attachment but usually I prefer handsewing zippers.

This picture really shows the true colors of the purse. I love them!

The zipper was shorter than my purse opening so I knit little squares to close up the gap.

I knit the squares until they looked like they would fit and then handsewed them into place.

I’m done with the purse now and am really happy with the way it turned out. Pictures of the completed purse coming soon.

Stash Skirt

Sticking with my Knit From Your Stash goals I’ve started a new project with some stash yarn. This yarn is Lion Brand Cotton Ease and is 50% cotton, 50% acrylic.

Stash skirt

Originally this yarn was for a knit yoga bag. I knit the pattern in another yarn and was unimpressed with the final result. The problem I found was the knit fabric was loose and putting a yoga mat into it was difficult. So I have three balls of this blue yarn. What to make?

Stash skirt

After some pondering and even dreaming of knitting I decided to knit myself a skirt. The top third will be in stockinette and the lower two thirds will be in a simple lace pattern. For the first time I’m trying circular needles which are enjoyable. Inspired by Elizabeth Zimmerman’s advice of “be the boss of your knitting” I’m making my own pattern.

Yay for socks!

I just finished my second sock. They fit and feel wonderful.

The self striping turned out really cool. I like how they match and yet are different.

I’m working on my no pattern purse tonight. It’s coming along nicely.

R.I.P. Eyelet Pullover

Eyelet Pullover RIP

My Eyelet Pullover is headed to the frog pond. My desperate measure of boiling the thing only resulted in the armpits shrinking. The sleeves are gorilla sleeves and the bottom hangs down to my knees. Plus when I put it on the lace looks horrible with my breasts. Bah!

I’ve moved past the anger, past the tears and am in the acceptance state. Oh I’ll probably cry while frogging it but I know it must be done. The yarn is nice so I might as well reuse it. Though truth be told the skeins will probably sit in my stash for a long while.

This was a tough project. I struggled throughout the whole thing and now at the end I don’t have anything to show for it. On the positive side I did learn a lot of new skills. While that’s good I still am bummed I don’t have a sweater after all that hard work.

Elizabeth Zimmerman is really inspiring me to make my own sweater. Her recipes for sweaters seem much better than a pattern. Maybe I’ll try one next.

Rest in peace eyelet sweater. I wish I could have worn you.

Purse Progress, Sock Progress

I finished seaming up my no pattern purse last night. I’m really liking the way it’s turning out.

No pattern purse

It’s big enough to fit a book so it will be great to bring along a knitting project. I’ll buy a zipper next and iron the fabric for the lining.

I’m thinking of naming this purse and writing up a pattern when I’m done.

My second sock is coming along nicely.

This sock pattern rocks. I’m so glad I got the book.

A Successful Sock

I finished my self striping sock and it’s beautiful! Even Prana thinks so:

I’m really happy with the way it fits. The bind off the book gave didn’t work for me. I ended up binding off so tight I couldn’t pull the sock on. Luckily, Wendy recently gave some tips on sock bind offs. I’m so thankful, she saved me a lot of stress and it’s really a great bind off technique. A little more detail on the technique is mentioned in this entry.
